The Denton store is one of the first to join the union since February when Starbucks said it wanted to work with labor organizers.
Starbucks employees and supporters link arms during a union election watch party a couple years ago in Buffalo, N.Y. Starbucks and the union organizing its U.S. workers said in February they have agreed to begin talks to reach labor agreements. Starbucks baristas in Denton voted Tuesday to join the Workers United union, becoming the 20th location in Texas to unionize.
The location, at Loop 288 and Interstate 35, voted 16-4 in favor of reaching a contract covering wages, safe working conditions, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling. The Denton store is also one of the first to join the union since February when Starbucks signaled it wanted to work with unions. Shelby Rexrode-Cox, an employee of more than 8 years at the Denton Starbucks, said she is “excited for the possibilities this opens up for taking care of our partners.
Starbucks was found to have committed more than 400 violations of federal labor law, including dozens of unlawful firings, refusing to bargain and unlawfully providing nonunion workers higher wages and better benefits than workers who voted to form a union.posted a blog on the company’s website in February expressing a new “desire to work together, with the goal of completing bargaining and contract ratification in 2024 for stores that have chosen to be represented by Workers United.
Starbucks and Workers United agreed to begin discussions on “a foundational framework designed to help achieve ratified bargaining agreements, resolve certain litigation and address other issues.” Starbucks said it is “eager to reach ratified agreements in 2024 for stores that have already voted for union representation.”The company’s decision comes under Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who in April 2023 succeeded founder Howard Schultz on his second stint as CEO.
