It has potential for alternative uses subject to planning permission
An “extensive” former church in Leicestershire has smashed estimates at auction. The former Castle Donington Methodist Church, in Market Street, had been hailed as a “huge amount of property for the money” by sellers SDL Property Auctions when it went under the hammer.
The former place of worship, which was built in 1905, was also located in a “prominent place” in the centre of the village. Auctioneers said it also came with an adjoining assembly hall, meeting rooms and “amenity space”. SDL Property Auctions added the property offered “the potential for alternative uses” to its current religious use, subject to obtaining the necessary planning permissions. Expectations into the auction were high, with the property having a guide price of £150,000 set.It was the third time in a year the church had been under the auctioneer's hammer afer the methodist building - and accompanying house in Apiary Gate - were due to be sold off. However, the sale was postponed.
It was then put back on the market in April this year , but didn’t sell. The accompanying home was not included in this latest sale. The exclusion of the house did not seem to make a big difference on Wednesday this week as an internet bidder and phone bidder battled for the lot. After a little run of bids, the gavel was eventually brought down at £166,000 - £16,000 above the estimate.
