This uniquely structured deal came about when the NHL approached Smith to facilitate a resolution for the struggling Arizona Coyotes, allowing their owner to retain the team's name and logo with an option to establish a new expansion team in Arizona within five years after building a suitable new arena.
Franco highlighted Smith's tech background and strong partnerships as possible factors that may have attracted the NHL to Smith and his partners.
