The USAF are conducting operational training
Nottinghamshire residents may see glimpses of the United States Air Force this week. The USAF are conducting some routine operational training of its jets this week, with some aircrafts reportedly operating at speeds of up to 450 knots indicated air speed.
The training is due to end on Friday, March 31 and has been taking place from 5pm to 9pm this week. A spokesperson from the USAF said: "The training flying operations will be ending on Friday, March 31. "The scheduled block of time is from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. I do not have specific times within that timeframe that the night flying will be completed but there is no scheduled flying past that timeframe. Both F-15E's and F-35's are participating in night flying operations.
"These operations are conducted to provide continued training for aircrew members in low-light and night time environments and ensure readiness in the interest of NATO's collective defence and mutual security agreements between the U.S. and U.K. The training ranges utilized during these night flying operations are over the North Sea and aircraft will transit from RAF Lakenheath to those ranges with overland flying being limited as much as possible.
"All training being conducted is in accordance with Ministry of Defence and UK airspace regulations."

Push in States for $20 Minimum Wage as Inflation PersistsJust years after labor activists persuaded a handful of states to raise their minimum wage to $15 per hour, workers initially thrilled with the pay bump are finding their hard-won gains erased by inflation. New York, California, and Massachusetts are among states where legislation has been filed to boost minimum wages to $20 or more. But opponents to hikes in wages say it can be detrimental to small businesses who already operate on thin margins. Barry Nicholson, a businessowner in Corning, a city by the Finger Lakes in New York, said a big wage increase would be “a smack in the face to small businesses.”

The Covid-19 pandemic and the expansion of the mortality gap between the United States and its European peersThe mortality gap between the United States and other high-income nations substantially expanded during the first two decades of the 21st century. International comparisons of Covid-19 mortality suggest this gap might have grown during the Covid-19 pandemic. Applying population-weighted average mortality rates of the five largest West European countries to the US population reveals that this mortality gap increased the number of US deaths by 34.8% in 2021, causing 892,491 “excess deaths” that year. Controlling for population size, the annual number of excess deaths has nearly doubled between 2019 and 2021 (+84.9%). Diverging trends in Covid-19 mortality contributed to this increase in excess deaths, especially towards the end of 2021 as US vaccination rates plateaued at lower levels than in European countries. In 2021, the number of excess deaths involving Covid-19 in the United States reached 223,266 deaths, representing 25.0% of all excess deaths that year. However, 45.5% of the population-standardized increase in excess deaths between 2019 and 2021 is due to other causes of deaths. While the contribution of Covid-19 to excess mortality might be transient, divergent trends in mortality from other causes persistently separates the United States from West European countries. Excess mortality is particularly high between ages 15 and 64. In 2021, nearly half of all US deaths in this age range are excess deaths (48.0%).
