Gretchen Walsh makes a splash at the Paris Olympics, setting an Olympic record in her debut 100-meter butterfly event with a time of 55.38 seconds.
United States swimmer Gretchen Walsh made Olympic history when she dove into the pool making her swimming debut at the Paris Games on Saturday.Walsh's first event of her Olympic career was the 100-meter butterfly and she broke the Olympic record in the semifinal with a time of 55.38 seconds. Sarah Sjöström of Sweden previously held the record at 55.48.The 21-year-old Walsh holds the world record of 55.18 which she set at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in June.
'Her and I talked about that a lot after last summer because when she got back,' said UVA head coach and one of Team USA's coaches Todd DeSorbo. 'I don't know I'd say she was disappointed with her performance at Worlds. I think she would say that she wanted more. The challenge for her was that the whole goal was to make the team.
