The University of Tasmania says it will sell off two hotels it bought in central Hobart as it plans for a future with fewer international students.
Lobby group Save UTAS Campus says it hopes the university will sell more buildings it owns in central Hobart and use the funds to refurbish buildings on its Sandy Bay campus.
The hotels, which have a combined 174 rooms, will be put back on the market, with the university seeking expressions of interest from potential buyers.UTAS figures show its number of enrolled international students dropped 40 per cent from 6,322 in 2019 to 3,769 in 2022. "It's more a good business decision to move on two pieces of property that aren't going to serve the purpose that they thought they would serve," Mr Bailey said.
UTAS said the funds from the sale of the two hotels would be used for upgrades to the university's teaching, learning and research facilities, and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics facilities, in particular the redevelopment of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies in Taroona.
The group's co-chair Mike Foster said he was hopeful the move to sell the MidCity and Fountainside hotels was the start of the end of the move.
