Students detail consistent mishandling of sexual violence complaints as part of the biggest review of the university sector in years.
A number of students highlighted that when they tried to report their cases to colleges and universities, they were not taken seriously."A hall I was at last year had a three-strike rule: if three different people came forward with three different experiences of sexual assault or harassment, the accused person would be moved out," said another."
"Upon his return, he was permitted to engage in clinical placements at a hospital … my reservations were brushed aside."While respondents to the survey came from across many universities, the Australian National University was mentioned by 25 per cent of respondents and highlighted as a case study. "I have been sexually assaulted [three times] on campus … once I had someone grab me and try to drag me into his room … I had to pull my arm away and literally run in the opposite direction, he grabbed my arm so hard that it bruised. I brought it up to one of the student wellbeing teams at the ANU, who told me it doesn't count as assault," said another.
"Students who disclose are provided with appropriate and specialist pastoral care and clinical support by the university, the university also has a duty of care to support all students involved in student misconduct cases."It is also difficult to respond to a report that has not been sent to the university and which is based on anonymised testimony from an undetermined period of time.
"[The university's] spokesperson appears to be claiming as though they have proactively engaged with us on prevention programs they are delivering and that we chose not to collaborate — this is not the case."Current student Danny*, who detailed their assault as part of the survey but is not at ANU, is hopeful the submissions and the accord review will lead to change that will make students safer.
"That's a major one for me because it traumatised me further and enabled the perpetrator to get to me the next day."Last year, I went to my friend’s apartment to get ready for the student association’s start-of-semester party. Here, I met her roommates, including a new student who had just started his degree.

Fears Queensland will buckle under increased housing pressure supplyThere are fears Queensland could buckle under increased housing pressure supply as further international migration of students continues into the state. Data from the Education Department shows the Sunshine State recorded a 41 per cent spike in international students in the first six months of the year, equivalent to around 40,000 people. Around 16,000 of those are living in purpose-built student accommodation, which has forced many to compete alongside families. The housing market conditions are remarkably tight as rental vacancy rates continue to decrease, with rental prices increasing in multiple areas around Queensland. It comes as the state recorded vacancy rates in all but four regions across Queensland, which have dwindled to below one per cent.
