Women across America are proudly trumpeting their child-free, cat-full lifestyle after a 2021 interview resurfaced this week in which GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance trotted out the well-worn “cat lady” trope in connection with women he called “miserable” about their lives without children. “Childless cat ladies unite,” women are posting on social media to let Vance, and the world, know they’re happy and fulfilled, thank you very much.
Cats, moreover, and especially black ones, were commonly believed to be demonic, even satan incarnate. Prejudice against the “crazy cat lady” may have originally targeted postmenopausal women for no longer being able to have children and not having families to support them. Vance’s comments, however, have hit a nerve with women across the age spectrum, as demonstrated by the surfeit of TikTok videos from young “childless cat ladies” cuddling their pets.
