Based on the 2017 memoir by Delia Balmer, the ITV show starring Anna Maxwell-Martin tracks the terrifying story of a relationship with a murderer
the voices of victims are lost along the way, abandoned in favour of exploring the more enticing depths of their abuser or killer’s rotten psyche.is a rare example of centring a female victim’s experience – but then the four-part ITV series, being shown on consecutive nights this week, has something many true crime stories do not: a survivor.and depicts how she began and attempted to end a relationship with John Sweeney, only to be held hostage and subsequently attacked with an axe.
But the first episode tracks back to long before that, when Balmer first met Sweeney in a Camden pub in 1991. Played by Anna Maxwell-Martin , Balmer was an unusual woman who proves a fascinating subject. Something of a loner, the kooky 40-year-old agency nurse was a free spirit who loved to travel, lacked people skills and attracted the teasing of colleagues who label her an “oddball”.
But the two central performances from Maxwell-Martin and Evans are what will compel audiences to return each night this week. In particular, Maxwell-Martin is a revelation as Balmer, a knotty character whose spikiness alienates people, and may well alienate viewers – for want of a better word, she is “difficult”. The less than flattering portrayal is all the more interesting given Balmer herself was involved in the show’s production.
Knowing what we do about the way that victims are treated by the judicial system, her idiosyncrasies will undoubtedly clash with the authorities if and when she does seek help, far as she is from someone who easily engenders sympathy. Despite being slightly uneven in its telling, this is a disturbing and uneasy watch that engages with and challenges perceptions of victimhood – something that much true crime is unwilling to do.
