Because the research took place in 2020, it only takes into account people who had not been vaccinated at the time they were infected with COVID. But because of the sheer number of people who fell ill in the first wave, the study's authors say it can still help evaluate future outbreaks.

More than 7,500 COVID patients were identified for the study through UK Biobank, a large biomedical database containing huge amounts of health data on half a million participants across the country. Each patient was matched with up to 10 people who did not catch COVID during the first 18 months of the outbreak, and with a historical cohort from back in 2018.

Medical records were monitored for outcomes including heart failure and heart attack, a stroke, death from cardiovascular disease, and all-cause death.Researchers then compared the number of infected people who developed a condition, or who died, with how many uninfected people who did. The findings have been published in Cardiovascular Research, a European Society of Cardiology journal.COVID's 'huge impact' on risk of heart disease
