An updated severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Monday at 3:40 p.m. valid until 4:30 p.m. for Jackson and Madison counties.
Update: Damaging winds and quarter-sized hail forecast with thunderstorms to hit Jackson and Madison counties Monday"At 3:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Lynchburg, moving southeast at 25 mph," states the weather service. "Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings."
When venturing outdoors, it's vital to establish a clear plan for seeking shelter in case of lightning. If you find yourself outdoors with no access to indoor shelter during a thunderstorm, take these steps to maximize your safety:Steer clear of tall, isolated trees and other prominent objects. In forested areas, stay close to lower stands of trees.
Do not approach water bodies, wet objects, or metal items. While water and metal don't attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively and can pose significant risks. When stopping by the roadside is your only option, position your vehicle as far off the road as possible, ideally beyond guardrails. Keep your headlights on and activate emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.
