After the closest finish in Cup Series history, what does NASCAR have in store for us this weekend at Darlington Raceway?
DAVID MUNDEE Ariton head coach Bob Pickett said the Purple Cats had to go through a “gauntlet” to reach the Class 2A state championship series.
The Purple Cats won four playoff series to reach the finals, including three on the road, after finishing runner-up in Class 2A, Area 4 to G.W. Long. “We had to go to a top 10 team in TA at their place, beat them, but it wasn’t easy. We had to turn around and play Wicksburg, who had two of the better arms in the south and we were able to beat them and that wasn’t easy. Then we had to go to Reeltown where they had the kid with the electric arm and had a lot of guys returning and that wasn’t easy.
In the opener, Ian Senn pitched all five innings, striking out six and allowing only five hits. In game two, Austin Evans pitched a five-inning three-hit shutout with one strikeout. The two combined to walk only one batter over 10 innings, that coming in the fourth inning by Evans with Ariton up 7-0.
The Eagles inched ahead with a run in the top of the second, but it would be the last run of the day for the host team. Senn, after allowing four hits and two runs in the first two innings, retired 10 of the last 11 to finish the game.In the fourth, the Purple Cats loaded the bases off a Tyler double, a hit by pitch to Hughes Hammock and a Kilpatrick walk.
