After her friend was murdered by an estranged ex-husband, Bass Coast woman Lija Matthews began rallying support for others in desperate need of a safe space.

Lija Matthews and Samantha Fraser quickly became close friends when they met about eight years ago, but it took some time for Ms Matthews to learn of the horrors facing her friend at home.Service providers say there are no refuges in the Bass Coast for people fleeing family violence

Ms Matthews, the organisation's director, said Ms Fraser was "shuffled around" between support services and that it was vital people in her situation knew where to get help.There are no crisis refuges, despite breaches of family violence orders being the most common criminal offence in the region in the year to June.

The Victorian government has been establishing the service across the state in line with recommendations from the 2015 Royal Commission into Family Violence."We are still advocating for a space for Orange Door, a family violence area to help locals," she said. "There is certainly not enough emergency accommodation in terms of refuges and supported accommodation," she said.
