A petition has been launched calling for urgent repairs to Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, which is facing significant infrastructure issues including flooding, collapsing ceilings, and a backlog of maintenance estimated at £134 million. The hospital, despite its dire condition, was not included in the government's first wave of hospital regeneration projects, leaving local MP Tom Morrison to campaign for its inclusion.
A Stockport MP has launched a petition calling for urgent repairs to Stepping Hill Hospital . The M.E.N has previously reported on the state of the hospital, plagued by poorly maintained infrastructure resulting in flooded corridors and collapsing ceilings . In one instance, the damage was so severe that one of its major outpatient buildings was last year condemned for demolition.
However, the Hazel Grove hospital did not qualify for a scheme to rebuild ageing hospitals, left by the Conservatives, which was then taken over last year by the new Labour government. \Following a spending review, the government finally announced on January 20 that North Manchester General Hospital would be refurbished as part of Wave One of their hospital regeneration programme, a move pushed for by a Manchester Evening News campaign. But Stepping Hill remains excluded. Now, the Lib Dem MP for Cheadle, Tom Morrison, has launched a petition to drum up support for the rebuild. \ 'Stepping Hill Hospital is falling apart, with a £134 million repair backlog and no funding from the Government,' he wrote on Facebook. 'Burst pipes, flooding corridors and ceilings collapsing - our incredible NHS staff and patients deserve better. I promised to fight for Stepping Hill, and together, we are making our voices heard. But to force the government to act, we need even more signatures. Local residents need to show the Government how much we need to save Stepping Hill. Please add your name to the petition below.' The M.E.N. has previously reported that the issues plaguing the hospital have led to a serious dip in its capacity for outpatient appointments, with the hospital's intensive care department out of action for days. The hospital's chief executive has warned that bosses at the site must be 'realistic' about the amount of funding to maintain the current buildings – 'meaning are likely to experience more issues as the result of our ageing buildings'. The government says that Stepping Hill has received £11.5 million from the critical infrastructure risks programme this financial year (24/25) to address the backlog of maintenance works. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “No one is under any illusions that the NHS estate we inherited is crumbling, following years of neglect, but repairing and rebuilding our hospital estate is a key part of our ambition to create a health service that is fit for the future. “At the Budget, we announced £1 billion to address the backlog of critical NHS maintenance, repairs and upgrades, and tackle dangerous RAAC concrete, as part of the highest capital budget in real terms since before 2010.” “This includes £750 million to enable the NHS to begin to address the poorest quality estates and help ensure hospitals are safe and sustainable.
