Rhinovirus, known to be the most frequent cause of the common cold, is the only virus which has seen cases rise in the last week or so compared to Coronavirus, RSV and influenza
A potentially deadly winter flu is circulating again, putting children under five at great risk of severe illness. Government data has shown a spike in Rhinovirus cases, especially in young kids, with the positivity rate increasing from 8.1% last week to 9.7%.
Rhinovirus, commonly known for causing colds, is currently the only virus showing an uptick in cases when compared to Coronavirus, RSV, and influenza. Symptoms can range from fever and cough to sore throat and headaches, and if not addressed, it could lead to serious conditions such as severe asthma attacks, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia, reports the Mirror.
"They are primarily associated with upper respiratory tract infection but can cause lower respiratory tract infection also. Rhinoviruses are small, non-enveloped viruses that belong to the Enterovirus genus, in the Picornaviridae family. There are 171 rhinovirus genotypes recognised and classified into three species as RV-A , RV-B , and RV-C ."
