The government is phasing out tax credits starting in April, meaning recipients must apply for Universal Credit to continue receiving financial support. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been sending out letters advising individuals to make the switch, but many are not responding, risking the loss of their benefits.
Certain benefit claimants have been issued an urgent warning not to disregard crucial letters from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ). The alert focuses on tax credit recipients, as these payments will be discontinued by the government starting April, with no further disbursements. Countless individuals are still claiming tax credits and should have received a notification advising them to submit an application for Universal Credit .
The transition to Universal Credit is a process that each person must initiate, as it does not occur automatically. Money Saving Expert (MSE), the website led by financial guru Martin Lewis, cautions that benefits will be 'cut off' for those who fail to make the application on time. Households typically have a three-month window from the receipt of the DWP's letter to enroll, with a strong recommendation to avoid delay. MSE highlighted that historically, 30 percent of individuals who received migration notices did not respond promptly and consequently forfeited their benefits. They issued a stark warning, stating: 'Tax credits warning. They END on April 5,' reports Birmingham Live. 'Don't ignore crucial letter or you could lose your benefits. There are still 100,000s of people on tax credits, but the scheme's due to be switched off in April. 'If you get them, be aware the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been sending letters by post to many people saying they must now apply to switch to Universal Credit. 'DON'T IGNORE IT, or your benefits will be cut off. Tragically this has happened to three in 10 people who have had letters in the past.'The Government stated: 'Universal Credit is replacing tax credits. If you do not claim by the deadline date in that letter your existing tax credits payments will stop, even if you have just renewed your tax credits claim.
