The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) warned of a possible 'explosion in the unlicensed sale of medication online', with people risking their health by purchasing Ozempic and Wegovy without proper checks.
Pharmacy leaders have sounded the alarm, urging individuals to steer clear of purchasing counterfeit weight-loss injections online, as shortages of Ozempic are anticipated to continue into the next year.
With over 5,000 independent community pharmacies under its wing, the NPA is advising patients to consult their pharmacist or GP rather than risking their health with unregulated online purchases from unregistered sellers. Issues with the supply of Ozempic are expected to continue into next year, it has been warned.
On the subject of Wegovy stock levels, he noted: "Wegovy stocks aren't too bad at the moment, it's Ozempic that is problematic. We've been told those stocks aren't going to come back in in 0.25, 0.5mg or 1mg doses until December 27." The statement highlighted "supply issues have been caused by an increase in demand for these products for licensed and off-label indications" and noted that supply is "not expected to return to normal until at least the end of 2024".
