Chinese state media has claimed that the Chinese Coast Guard have captured an American anti-submarine probe in the South China Sea.

The “probe” is most likely a British-made sonobuoy, a device commonly used by many military forces to detect submarines.Chinese media sources have reported that they have intercepted and captured an American anti-submarine probe in the South China Sea. Reportedly, the alleged US military device was launched from an aircraft earlier the same day, and the Chinese Coast Guard were reportedly able to easily locate and recover it.and is alleged to have occurred on Wednesday .

A sonobuoy is a small, expendable sonar buoy released from aircraft or ships. It is used for anti-submarine warfare or underwater acoustic research. Sonobuoys are typically about 5 inches in diameter and 3 feet in length. When floating on the water, they have a radio transmitter above the surface and hydrophone sensors underwater.

Regarding the deployment of the apparent sonobuoy, China and the Philippines have conflicting claims of sovereignty over the Second Thomas Shoal. Both sides have clashed multiple times in recent months. Beijing refers to the shoal as Renai Jiao, while Manila calls it Ayungin Shoal.. The vessel was on a mission to resupply the BRP Sierra Madre, a World War II-era navy ship deliberately grounded on the shoal to function as a military outpost.

Washington previously stated that it supported its long-time defense ally, condemning Beijing’s “escalatory and irresponsible actions” in the area. It reiterated that armed attacks on Philippine forces, public vessels, aircraft, and coast guards would trigger their mutual defense treaty.on Saturday that a task force of the People’s Liberation Army Navy had recently carried out a four-day combat exercise in the South China Sea without specifying the exact date.
