A Russian spy plane has scanned Japan's northern coast for the second time in four weeks.
Japan's air force scrambled fighter aircraft over the weekend to intercept a Russian intelligence plane operating in its northwestern seas, according to the Defense Ministry in Tokyo.A Newsweek map, created using the Japanese government's geospatial data, roughly traces the flight path of the Russian air force Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft, which was detected in Japan's air defense identification zone off the west coast of its Hokkaido and Honshu islands on Saturday.
Last week, statistics released by the office showed that Japan's Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets were scrambled 41 times in April, 13 times against Russian planes approaching from the north and 28 against Chinese aircraft in the southwest.Annual data published in April showed that Japanese aircraft were launched 669 times in the fiscal year 2023, which ended on March 31, including 174 times against Russia aircraft, up 24 times from the previous 12-month period.
