El Salvador agrees to accept deportees from any country, including criminals. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hails the agreement as the most extraordinary in the world.

The United States has reached an unprecedented agreement with El Salvador regarding migration, with El Salvador agreeing to accept deportees from any country, including those convicted of crimes. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that El Salvador 's President Nayib Bukele had offered to accept deportees of all nationalities, including dangerous American criminals currently incarcerated in the United States.

Rubio hailed the agreement as the most unprecedented and extraordinary migratory agreement globally, emphasizing Bukele's willingness to accept even US citizens or legal residents convicted of violent offenses. Following Rubio's statement, a US official clarified that the Trump administration currently has no plans to deport American citizens. However, they acknowledged the significance of Bukele's offer. The agreement, known as a 'safe third country' agreement, would enable the US to deport non-Salvadorean migrants to El Salvador. Officials have suggested this option could be pursued for Venezuelan gang members convicted in the United States if Venezuela refuses to take them back. However, Rubio stated that Bukele's offer extends to detainees of any nationality. Rubio's visit to El Salvador aimed to press the government to intensify its efforts to meet the Trump administration's demands for a significant crackdown on immigration. He arrived in San Salvador shortly after observing a US-funded deportation flight carrying 43 migrants from Panama to Colombia. Rubio was present at the departure of the flight, which transported 32 men and 11 women. Addressing the issue of mass migration, Rubio stated, 'Mass migration is one of the great tragedies in the modern era. It impacts countries throughout the world. We recognize that many of the people who seek mass migration are often victims and victimised along the way, and it's not good for anyone.
