Latin American countries could help cut the US dependence on China

The US and Peru signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals between the two countries.Jose Fernandez, US undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, signed a similar agreement with Argentina earlier this week while travelling to Argentina, Ecuador and Peru to engage on the critical mineral supply chain.The US is trying to secure its critical mineral supply chain, specifically looking to cut its dependence on China.

Earlier this year, Fernandez commented that the US should involve Latin American countries more in multilateral-focus trade forums, considering China's growing influence in the region."Brazil could be a very valuable partner in finding critical minerals," he said. "It's not only Brazil. Argentina, Chile, Peru; we've got to do more in this hemisphere.
