THE United States (US) has committed to help the Philippines in containing and cleaning up the massive oil spill in Oriental Mindoro, Malacañang said on Tuesday.
Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said the commitment was made during a phone call between Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday.In his update on the oil spill, Garfil said Galvez reported to President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. that the US government has committed to deploy naval units to help in the clean-up operation in the area.'I had a phone call with Sec[retary] Austin at 7:45 p.m.
''In fact, as I've recommended, some of the exercise scenarios of the forthcoming 'Balikatan' Exercises will be 'real life' and actual HADR operations relative to the oil spill,' he said.Galvez said the Philippine government will also continue to seek the expertise and technical support of other partner countries, such as France and the United Kingdom, in containing the oil spill in the island of Mindoro.
