Russia's security service detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on spying charges drawing condemnation from the US and a warning for any American citizens to leave the country.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday local time said he was"deeply concerned" about Mr Gershkovich's arrest. The White House also hit out at Moscow saying"the targeting of American citizens by the Russian government is unacceptable," while the Wall Street Journal demanded"the immediate release for our trusted and dedicated reporter."
"We also condemn the Russian government's continued targeting and repression of journalists and freedom of the press." "The foreigner was detained in Yekaterinburg while attempting to obtain classified information," they said in a statement. Yekaterinburg is a city in central Russia 1,800km east of Moscow.
