A large-scale nuclear incident training exercise has been taking place in upstate New York, simulating a response to a potential nuclear event. While authorities assure the public there is no risk involved, the drills come amidst heightened global tensions and concerns about a possible World War 3.

A large-scale, multi-agency nuclear incident training exercise has been quietly underway in upstate New York this week. The exercise, which kicked off in Schenectady on Sunday and continues through Friday, provides participating agencies with an opportunity to 'practice and enhance operational readiness to respond in the event of a nuclear incident in the United States or overseas,' according to FBI Albany.

The exercise involves the use of aircraft and personal protective equipment to simulate realistic conditions, but FBI Albany assures the public that there is no risk involved. 'The training exercise will not pose any risk to area residents; the public does not need to be alarmed by training-related activity, including the presence of military personnel and aircraft, and people in protective equipment,' stated the office. The exercise comes amid heightened global tensions and concerns about a potential World War 3. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that WW 3 could begin if the West continues to escalate the situation in Ukraine. However, FBI Albany Public Affairs Officer Sarah Ruane stated that planning for the exercise began in spring 2024, prior to these recent escalations. 'This is an exercise of the National Technical Nuclear Forensics Ground Collection Task Force, which would support the investigation of a nuclear incident,' Ruane told the Daily Mail. 'The Task Force mission is to collect nuclear debris samples for analysis at the national laboratories.' This biannual exercise is part of the federal government's regularly scheduled training programs and similar drills have been conducted across the country since 2012. Due to the 'sensitive nature of the capabilities being implemented,' the activities are not open to media or public observation. The drills are taking place across Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties at various sites including Albany Airport and Stratton Air National Guard Base. The involved agencies include the FBI, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Energy, and various state and local partners
