Next week, Kamala Harris could be elected America's first female president - but she's been making history for decades. It starts in Berkeley, California...
"Let's get out there, let's fight for it... And together let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told."
Before turning 40, she assumed the office of District Attorney, the city's chief legal officer. Later, she became the first woman, and first black person, to be elected Attorney General in California, the state's so-called"top cop". "Kamala and Maya were with Shyamala a lot" says Carole Porter, who was the same age as Kamala and lived nearby, spending much of her childhood with the future vice president. Kamala and Carole were among those who participated in a desegregation busing project. This photo shows a bus similar to those they rode in and was taken in February 1970. Pic AP"The bus looked a little like the United Nations.”
"Everything that she says is being questioned now," says Carole."But we both grew up in that neighbourhood that was middle-class to lower-income."On the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, one of Kamala Harris's former boyfriends is holding court at a San Francisco seafood restaurant, known for its laid back charm.
A clip from a news report at the time shows a reporter asking Harris if she is Brown's daughter. It recently went viral and was seized upon by the political right. “There was a great friendship that blossomed and translated itself into wonderment for me, and I hope wonderment for her.” By the turn of the millennium she had become an established barrister in San Francisco, and took a job in the City Attorney’s Office handling neglect, child abuse and adoption cases. Her boss there, Louise Renne, who now runs her own law firm, remembers Harris as driven but generous.
Harris chose not to seek the death penalty for the 22-year-old gang member who killed Espinoza, in line with a campaign promise she made not to pursue capital punishment. She announced the decision at a press conference, without warning. "I think she talks a lot of hot air but when it comes to actually producing and having concrete results, well, where are they? Because I'm not seeing them."
He set her up on a blind date with Doug Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer, who is based in Los Angeles. The pair quickly became an item and Emhoff's son, Cole, described them as"falling in love, acting like teenagers".
