The moves came on the eighth day of brutal fighting in Sudan between the army and a paramilitary group that has left more than 400 people dead.
| The United States military airlifted embassy officials out of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, amid continuing violence as rival military leaders battled for control of Africa’s third-largest country, President Joe Biden said late on Saturday .
Diplomats are working with countries with officials on the ground in Khartoum to gather information on departure options. As the situation deteriorated, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Molly Phee, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, had been in close contact with the US ambassador to Sudan, John Godfrey, officials said. Mr Godfrey – the first US ambassador to Sudan in a quarter-century – arrived in the country about eight months ago.
Earlier, army chief General Abdel Fattah Burhan said he would facilitate the evacuation of American, British, Chinese and French citizens and diplomats from Sudan after speaking with the leaders of several countries that had requested help.
