Amidst legal battles surrounding the Trump administration's efforts to halt USAID-funded humanitarian projects, Amref Health Africa CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi highlights the severe consequences for healthcare delivery in Africa. The loss of US funding, accounting for 25% of Amref's operations, will deprive millions of essential services, including vaccinations, TB and HIV treatment, and impact the organization's 700-strong workforce. Dr. Gitahi emphasizes the need for alternative funding sources from various stakeholders, while also acknowledging China's growing role in international aid, primarily focused on infrastructure.

Amref Health Africa CEO, Dr. Githinji Gitahi, spoke to Channel 4 News about the significant impact of the Trump administration's efforts to shut down thousands of USAID -funded humanitarian projects globally, including essential healthcare initiatives. Dr. Gitahi highlighted that US government support for Amref's programs accounts for approximately 25% of their total activity and revenue.

Without this funding, numerous communities will be deprived of crucial services, such as vaccinations for mothers and children, testing and treatment for TB and HIV patients. The situation also affects Amref's staff, who will be placed on unpaid leave. Amref currently serves over 17 million people annually, including mothers, children, men, and boys suffering from infectious diseases. The organization also provides valuable support to governments through research, policy advice, and advocacy, helping them deliver better healthcare. Dr. Gitahi expressed concern about the funding gap left by the curtailed USAID support. While Amref is actively seeking alternative funding sources from foundations, philanthropists, European and African governments, and private sector partners, there are no immediate commitments. The organization is also organizing its Africa Health Agenda International Conference in March to mobilize resources and close this critical gap. He acknowledged China's growing interest in international aid, primarily focused on infrastructure development. While China's involvement in infrastructure projects might fill a specific gap, Dr. Gitahi expressed doubt about their commitment to supporting services and commodities like medicine, essential for Amref's work. He concluded by emphasizing the need for solidarity with African people and the importance of finding sustainable solutions to ensure continued access to essential healthcare services
