US kills revered Iranian general in rocket strike as countries stand on brink of war
A US airstrike killed a revered Iranian general at Baghdad airport on Friday - as the two countries stand on the brink of war.
The powerful leader of Iran's elite Quds Force was targeted as he plotted an attack on American diplomats, according to the Pentagon. Responding to the news of Soleimani's death, President Donald Trump struck a patriotic tone by posting a single image of the American flagA statement released by the Pentagon said: “General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.
It was also reported Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of the Iran-backed militia know as the Popular Mobilization Forces, or PMF, was killed in the strike.President Trump has been using a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran, which has moved on from economic sanctions to military activity.
