The U.S. Open is back at Pinehurst No. 2 for the fourth time since 1999. But there's been other big events on the North Carolina gem. Michelle Wie won her only major there in 2014. Denny Shute won the PGA Championship at Pinehurst in 1936. And the Americans have a Ryder Cup title from Pinehurst. The Ryder Cup wasn't a big deal back then.

FILE - Denny Shute, right, is presented with the PGA Championship trophy at Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C., Nov. 22, 1936. Shute defeated Jimmy Thomson, left, in the final round, 3 and 2. Presenting the trophy is George Jacobus, president of the Professional Golf ers’ Association. Shute was the first major champion at Pinehurst. FILE - U.S.

Notable: No golf was played on Saturday so both teams and spectators could travel to Chapel Hill for a college football game. Tennessee beat North Carolina 27-0. Quotable: “All I wanted to do was give myself a chance. I kept playing. I kept plugging. I never gave up.” — Payne Stewart.Recap: Michael Campbell became the first player from New Zealand to win a major since Bob Charles in the 1963 British Open. Campbell holed clutch par putts and finally pulled away when Tiger Woods three-putted the par-3 17th, the same hole that ended his charge in 1999. Campbell closed with a 69 and was the only player who did not finish over par.
