The United States opens new diplomatic office in the capital of Honiara, in the latest of its moves aiming to limit China's expanding presence across the Pacific region.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the State Department had informed the Solomon Islands' government that the opening of the new embassy in the capital, Honiara, became official as of January 27. Its embassy is starting small with a chargé d'affaires, a couple of State Department staff and a handful of local employees.
