The ban arrives amidst warnings from agencies such as the FBI, cautioning that TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance could potentially share users’ sensitive data with China’s authoritarian government. In favor of a revised divestment or ban bill against TikTok, the House voted 360 to 58. ByteDance will have nine months, with a three-month extension, to find a buyer for the video-sharing app if the legislation is signed into law. Earlier, President Joe Biden declared he would sign the bill.
The company is likely to challenge the bill in court, which may extend the deadline set by the US lawmakers.The company has claimed that TikTok is an independent platform, with its own leadership team, including a CEO based in Singapore, a COO based in the US and a global head of trust and safety based in Ireland.
