US President Joe Biden will travel to the United Kingdom and Belgium in June for his first overseas trip, the White House has said

Tensions had risen in the region after tens of thousands of Russian soldiers gathered near Donbas, and wargames were carried out in Crimea.

Confirmation that President Biden will attend the G7 Summit as well as separate NATO and EU/US summits in Brussels is, at the very least, a hint that in the White House there is a belief that by then it will be safe, appropriate and responsible to be seen to travel internationally. The trio of events, which will happen back-to-back, will allow the president the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the leaders of nearly 40 countries.Politically, the three meetings will all provide vitally important moments where world leaders will sit down for the first time since the pandemic began.

As well as a key focus on global economic recovery, the leaders will discuss issues of public health and climate change. The NATO meeting will allow the American president to mend what became a strained relationship with America under the leadership of his predecessor, Donald Trump. Mr Trump threatened to pull out of NATO as he questioned the varied financial commitments its member nations made to the alliance.
