The US president will make clear Israel has the right to defend itself as it prepares for a possible ground attack in Gaza
October 17, 2023 1:23 amUS President Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a bid to show solidarity with Israel as it prepares for a large offensive against Hamas.
Mr Biden will make clear Israel has the right to defend itself when he meets Mr Netanyahu, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said as he confirmed the trip would take place. It comes as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows more dire and as Israel prepares for a possible ground attack on the territory to root out Hamas militants responsible for what US and Israeli officials say was the most lethal assault against Jews since the Holocaust.Officials have said they would ask Congress for upward of $2bn in additional aid for both Israel and Ukraine, which is fighting Russia’s invasion.
