Conceptualized in 2017, the project aims to use AI and machine learning to make systems more efficient across military operations.

The US Department of Defense has awarded Palantir a $480 million contract to begin building the prototype of the Army’s Maven Smart System project.

It combines data received from multiple sources – satellite and drone images, videos from surveillance platforms, communications intercepted from various sources, and more – to locate and pinpoint potential targets. Its role goes beyond target recognition in battlefields; Maven can be used for increasing awareness on the ground and for identifying troop movements.

Earlier last year, it had won a $250 million US Army AI research contract. The contract was to research and experiment with AI and machine learning.
