Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday stated that the U.S. will prioritize safeguarding American artificial intelligence and chip technologies, actively blocking any attempts to weaponize these critical advancements.
Vance emphasized, 'We will safeguard American AI and chip technologies from theft and misuse, collaborate with our allies and partners to strengthen and broaden these protections, and close any avenues allowing adversaries to acquire AI capabilities that pose a threat to all of our people.' He underscored the dangers posed by authoritarian regimes exploiting AI for military intelligence, surveillance, data capture, and propaganda aimed at undermining national security. Vance declared, 'This administration will unequivocally block such endeavors.' The focus of the AI Action Summit in Paris this week has largely revolved around China's AI model, DeepSeek, which claims to match the performance of OpenAI's o1 reasoning model at a significantly lower cost. While Vance didn't mention DeepSeek by name, he directly criticized cheap, heavily subsidized technologies often exported by authoritarian regimes. He cautioned against collaborating with firms operating under such regimes, stating that it 'never pays off' and 'chains your nation to an authoritarian master that seeks to infiltrate, dig in and seize your information infrastructure.'
