In a Senate hearing Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will likely be asked to explain the changes within USPS that led to widespread mail delays in Houston.WASHINGTON D.C., DC — In a Senate hearing Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is set to answer questions from the nation’s top lawmakers about the postal service and its operations.

According to a media advisory, the hearing will examine the U.S. Postal Service’s current service, operations, and finances, including oversight of changes to the Postal Service’s network and their potential impacts on mail delivery.Along with DeJoy, three other people are set to testify including USPS Board of Governors Chairman Roman Martinez IV, Postal Regulatory Commission Chairman Michael Kubayanda, and USPS Inspector General Tammy Hull.

It’s unclear how much of the proceedings will focus on the mail delays that have impacted cities across the country including Houston. However, DeJoy will likely have to defend the 10-year Delivering for America plan he implemented to “modernize” the postal service. USPS Office of Inspector General released a 17-page audit on the South Houston Local Processing Center in Missouri City.

At the facility, inspectors uncovered major issues with mail processing machines, staffing and facility conditions according to the audit. They also found that USPS did not communicate effectively with all stakeholders including the media about the changes that were planned for Houston’s mail processing network.Houston mail delays: Bride-to-be says wedding invitations got lost in the mail
