Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation said they’re looking for solutions to put an end people driving against the direction of traffic, which can end in tragedy.UDOT has been using new technology to help prevent wrong-way crashes. Ultimately, officials said, it's the driver who chooses if they will follow the rules.
“We’ve had some promising results so far, although we’ve continued to see wrong-way crashes,” he said.“What we've been doing now is installing them along and I-80 – some of our busy roads and just the highly trafficked areas, because it's hard to tell where exactly a wrong-way crash is going to occur,” Shaw said.
If a wrong-way driver enters the ramp, LED lights will blink at the driver, and it will notify drivers on the electronic boards.“People who are doing the wrong thing aren’t going to pay attention to the signs,” he said. “I guess the question is, are they under the influence.”“There has to be a level of personal accountability for people that are using the roadway.
Through the first three months of the year, UDOT reported five fatalities due to wrong-way driving. There were seven deaths in 2023, and 10 in 2022. “We keep an eye on the trend we’re not trending in a great way right now, but we're aware of it and we will use every tool, every strategy that we have at our disposal,” Shaw said.
