The Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed that their staff will conduct criminal investigations within the Utah National Guard.

FILE - Officials with the Utah National Guard have made changes to combat sexual abuse within their ranks after the top commander was dismissed for an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate.Boyack has made some quick moves in response to the issues with sexual assault, deciding the National Guard won't be investigating itself.

Amos Guiora, a professor at the University of Utah who researches enablers of sexual abuse, has been asked to look for systemic problems that need to be fixed. "It's to try to better understand the ecosystem of enabling that clearly leads to harm and come up with recommendations," Guiora said. He said he has been getting phone call after phone all from National Guard members wanting to share their stories with him.

Beyond the Guard, Guiora has pushed for legislators to make those who enable and hide sexual abuse face criminal charges.
