Two Utah fire crews left for New Mexico on Tuesday to help fight wildfires, while a third crew has been in the southwest state for over a week.

While Utah prepared for the first big fire of the summer, New Mexico already began dealing with fires burning thousands of acres.Phoenix-to-Las Vegas highway reopens after wildfire claims 6 homes near historic town" Salt Lake 1 is Unified Fire Authority's hand crew. They are a wildland specialty team that deploys around the United States,” said Benjamin Porter with the Unified Fire Authority.

The Lone Peak Hotshots have also been down there since June 9, but are on a prepositioning assignment until the 22, so they aren't expected to help out on either of these fires right now. “It's really kind of a cool system on how the nation works in this way. When one geographical area doesn't have a large fire threat, they'll deal up their resources to go deal with the areas that have the fire threat,” said Wade Snyder, Deputy Fire Management Officer at the Department of Natural Resources."Sometimes there's not a lot of fires to fight. So that's why it's nice to be able to share resources the way we do,” Synder said.
