The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay decided to go outside the box for their new basketball head coach.reported that Green Bay was hiring Doug Gottlieb to lead its basketball program. Gottlieb interviewed for the head coaching gig last offseason but lost out to Sundance Wicks, who was hired by Wyoming after only one season at Green Bay.Gottlieb plans to continue to host his daily radio show on FOX radio.

Gottlieb, who starred at Oklahoma State as a point guard, has been in the media business for over two decades now. Since 2017 he's hostedon Fox Sports Radio. Controversy has tended to follow Gottlieb throughout his career, however; most recently he was sued for libel by Freddie Freeman's agent, Casey Close, and issued a public apology.

Gottlieb has been attempting to get into the college coaching game for a while, and back in March he pitched himself for the Oklahoma State job while on the air. His alma mater ultimately went with a more proven option in Steve Lutz, but Gottlieb will get his chance now. He isn't taking on an easy job. The Green Bay Phoenix are part of the Horizon League and have made exactly one NCAA tournament appearance over the last 28 seasons. The team finished 18-14 under Wicks last season, their best record since the 2018-'19 season and a huge jump from the previous campaign in which they won only three games.
