Construction of the mid-rise to replace San Pedro’s demolished courthouse remains on hold.
Replacing the county courthouse at Sixth and Centre streets in San Pedro, an eight-story mixed-use development was expected to begin construction by fall 2023 but has been delayed. The ground floor was planned to include a food hall with several restaurants, full kitchens and an outdoor public area with space for small gatherings, music and events.
The shuttered courthouse is now surrounded by fencing in preparation for the start of demolition on Feb. 9, in San Pedro on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. But the past fallout has left the large plot of vacant land where San Pedro’s courthouse once stood still empty, which prompted discussions among San Pedro’s downtown managers this week. But Cockrum, in a telephone interview later, said that while they are willing to work with those ideas, there are liability issues and costs that could come into play.“While I am disappointed that the developer, Genton Cockrum Partners, hasn’t been able to secure the financing to build this project that has been promised to the community for years, their latest contract extension goes through the end of this year,” she said.
