A public inquiry has heard how triple killer Valdo Calocane brought a hammer to The Priory Hospital in Arnold , claiming he needed it for a non-existent new home.
Calocane, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates before running over three others in June 2023. The inquiry was told he brought the hammer back in his rucksack after a period of leave in October 2021. Dr Ajith Gurusinghe, the consultant psychiatrist responsible for his care, admitted Calocane's explanation was 'nonsense' but failed to officially report the incident.
The hammer was stored in Calocane's locker and returned to him when he was discharged eight days later.
'This is somebody who has come back with something that can be used as a weapon and it sounds like you thought it was nonsense,' counsel Craig Carr told the inquiry. Dr Gurusinghe admitted the incident should have been explored further but said there was 'no harm' at the time. Charge nurse Helen Foster said the hammer incident was 'not followed up at all' and criticised poor record-keeping procedures.
She told the inquiry: 'If we don't record things people are just completely unaware of it and it's a really serious thing.
' The inquiry also heard evidence about Calocane's manipulative behaviour during mental health assessments. Mental health practitioner Roseanna Crane said he gave 'evasive and superficial' answers and would 'steer his answers towards what he felt was the right thing to say'.
