A van driver was caught red-handed eating a bowl of cereal on a bustling motorway, while another trucker was filmed hurling abuse at police from an undercover HGV amid a crackdown on dangerous driving. Shocking footage also captured a lorry driver in South Yorkshire typing on a tablet or laptop as he drove.
South Yorkshire Police also observed 21 instances of drivers misusing the hard shoulder. The month-long enforcement action across Yorkshire's major roads, including the A1, M1, and M18, resulted in over 190 offences being recorded between 4 November and 13 December. Inspector Clive Turner, from North Yorkshire Police, commented: "Holding a driving licence is a privilege and not a right, however a small minority of people take it for granted."
Operation Tramline was initiated in 2015 to combat dangerous driving. The cabs provide police forces with an elevated viewpoint to monitor driver behaviour that could result in a fatality or serious injury on motorways and A roads.
