This is the last thing the Netherlands need as they prepare to face the USA NED
The Netherlands’ World Cup squad has reportedly been dealing with an outbreak of flu symptoms which has put a dent in their preparations ahead of the last 16 match against the USA.
Louis van Gaal’s side have had a positive World Cup campaign so far, winning two games and drawing one as they won their group in their first appearance since 2014, when they finished third.Van Gaal is optimistic that his side can match those heights as he has a better squad, but that squad has been dealt with a blow ahead of their match against a combative USA side, who are one of the few unbeaten teams remaining in the competition.
When asked about the apparent outbreak, manager Van Gaal said: “We are not going to elaborate on that [the illness bug going around in the squad]. But if it goes around in the group, it is worrying. There are not 15 or so. In principle, everyone is fit and available.” Curiously, the Dutch squad didn’t do any 11-v-11 drills in the build-up to the game and when Van Gaal was asked about that, he attributed it to rest, not illness.
