The healthy eating tokens - to help pregnant women and children increase their calcium intake - are putting vegans at an 'unfair' disadvantage, say activists.
Vegans have been left furious over an NHS healthy eating voucher scheme for pregnant women and young children that excludes all non-dairy milk options.
Charity campaigners said the restriction on the purchase of non-dairy milk will ‘unfairly and unreasonably’ put vegans at a disadvantage and claimed the move was ‘discriminatory’.Some pregnant women and parents of young children will be able to claim the free vouchers, which will replace the existing Healthy Start scheme, in summer 2019.
Vegan campaigners argue that dairy alternatives – such as soy, rice, and nuts – provide the same or greater amounts of calcium.Dr Jeanette Rowley, vegan rights advocate at The Vegan Society, said: ‘The aim of the new Best Start voucher scheme is to support healthy eating. ‘This proposed restriction unfairly disadvantages vegans and may constitute discrimination under equality law.’Heather Russell, dietitian at the Vegan Society, added: ‘It is important for everyone to eat calcium-rich foods daily and fortified plant milk plays an important role in vegan nutrition.
