The self-declared interim president was visiting other countries to boost support for his campaign against the Maduro government.

The head of Venezuela's national assembly declared himself interim president under the constitution on 23 January, claiming Mr Maduro had presided over a fraudulent election. He blames Mr Maduro for allowing the economy to deteriorate, with rampant inflation and people struggling to get food and medicine.

But Mr Maduro regards the campaign and the plan to bring in much-needed aid as a US-backed conspiracy to invade the oil-rich South American country.
