Great news for Venice 👏🇮🇹
Enormous cruise ships that have been blamed for blighting the ancient city of Venice are set to be banned.
Public opinion against the floating hotels hardened after five people were injured in a collision in June. The River Countess tourist boat is pictured after it was hit by the MSC Opera cruise ship that lost control as it was coming in to dock in Venice, Italy Angry Venetians took to the water in small boats to protest after the crash – which came a month after another cruise liner narrowly missed ploughing into a canal-side restaurant.Now the Italian government has announced it will begin re-routing the liners away from the historic city centre.
Venice has a population of just 55,000 although its historic buildings and waterways draw some 30 million tourists a year.
