Sutter was attempting to make a comeback after missing almost 2 1/2 years because of long-COVID symptoms.
The 34-year-old forward appeared in three of Edmonton’s first five preseason games, the last coming Saturday night in Vancouver. Overall, he performed adequately, especially given the long layoff.
Sutter had one assist while taking one minor penalty in nearly 42 minutes of ice time. He played 32 minutes at five-on-five and the shots and attempts were almost identical for the Oilers and their opponents, per Natural Stat Trick. The Oilers were outscored 2-1 with him on the ice in that situation.
Until Sunday’s news, Sutter was seen as having the inside track for the last spot up front with the Oilers. Because of cap constraints, the team is planning on carrying only 12 forwards — the bare minimum — but general manager Ken Holland and coach Jay Woodcroft have been transparent that the ideal person for that role is a defensive-minded, right-handed center. Sutter, a veteran of 770 NHL games, fit the description on all fronts.as the top candidates for the last forward slot.
