, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich nominated industry veteran Corey Smedley for the post on Thursday.
Elrich’s pick still must be confirmed by the Montgomery County Council. The new chief will take over a department facing the same cultural and operational shifts facing fire departments nationwide: They are being asked to focus more on being a public health and emergency medical services agency and act less like one focused on fighting fires.
Smedley grew up in D.C., he said in an interview Thursday. He later joined the U.S. Army Reserve. When his older sister became a firefighter in Prince George’s County, he was inspired to follow her.Smedley rose through the ranks, becoming a deputy chief at the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department. He left there in 2015 to become the Alexandria Fire Department’s deputy chief of homeland security and emergency management.In 2019, he became that city’s first Black fire chief.
