Under VA rules, veterans who have to travel long distances to receive VA healthcare are entitled to compensation for certain expenses, such as gas mileage, accommodations and food.
A veteran living in a remote area has canceled future appointments because he can’t afford itPublished: Apr. 12, 2024 at 7:50 AM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - After an Alaska veteran reached out to Alaska’s News Source asking for help about travel expenses he said the Department of Veterans Affairs has yet to reimburse, VA Healthcare System leaders said they are struggling with a backlog of claims to pay back local veterans.
Those rules state that veterans must be travel eligible, claims must have confirmation that an appointment was attended and must be received within 30 calendar days from the date of completed travel and receipts must be attached for verification and approval. The veteran said he’s already had to cancel some doctor appointments, saying the travel is not worth the expense if his reimbursement requests remain in limbo. He also says he has stopped scheduling additional appointments until he’s certain his claims will be processed in a timely manner.
“We’re behind, there’s no sugarcoating we are behind,” Hudson said. “We’re working diligently to bring it back up.”
